About this deal

Considering that petrol strimmers can be very powerful machines, it’s worth doing a bit of research before getting one, to make sure it’s the best petrol strimmer for you, your garden, and your lifestyle. Other handy features that Mculloch has seen to adding are that you can access the air filter without the need of tools, and made the fuel tank transparent so you know when it’s getting close to the time to fill up. Thankfully, with it’s excellent fuel consumption, those refills are few and far between. They can be a little too powerful. Unless you really need the strength of a petrol model, they may be more difficult to manage than it’s worth. Vibrations can also make them uncomfortable over extended periods. Manageability is especially important when considering a heavy petrol strimmer. These are powerful machines and, even with a harness, they can feel unwieldy. You need to be relatively confident in your physical ability, especially to use a strimmer over 10 kg.

Well, the answer I always give is: you need both, as they complement each other so well. Lawnmowers do the things that strimmers aren’t really suited for and vice versa. If the strimmer comes with two head attachments, one of them will likely be narrower than the other, making it more versatile. The nylon cutting wire works well and has a tap and go line feed head to keep your grass trimming session as uninterrupted as possible. Again, this functions as it should and without issue, and renewing the strimmer line won’t have you tearing your hair out in frustration. Generally, it seems this model is quieter than competing petrol strimmers, which might make it a bit more ‘neighbour friendly’, especially if you’re fond of working the early mornings or evenings. They are usually lighter in weight than corded models, and easier to manoeuvre. There’s also no chance that you’ll accidentally cut through the cable! Can a strimmer cut long grass?READ NEXT: How to Use a Strimmer on Long Grass Can I use a strimmer to mow the lawn or trim hedges? It’s a professional grade petrol strimmer and is designed with ergonomic bicycle handles which are comfortable to use even for extended periods. To make the job even easier this petrol model comes with a harness to help evenly distribute the weight of it and saves fatigue.

The Stihl FS55 is an entry-level model, but don’t let that fool not thinking that this product isn’t top-class, as when compared to most other petrol trimmers out there, this one comes out on top. Ryobi is known for producing good products that are well made, and this one is no exception. The build quality feels good and not at all flimsy. The engine, a POWR LT2 26cc 2 stroke machine, has been designed to not only be compact and very lightweight, but also to be a ‘clean’ engine that produces fewer emissions than most petrol garden strimmers, so you can feel good about doing your bit to save the planet. The engine that powers the BU-KO petrol strimmer / multi-tool is a meaty 52cc, 2 stroke machine that starts easily and produces 3 HP. This should see you have no problems with any of the tasks that you wish to use the multi-tool for, be it cutting, pruning or hedge trimming. The fuel tank has a capacity of 1200ml. In these instances, having a narrower cutting width can be useful. This is another reason why it’s useful to have a choice of cutting heads. The power cord keeps you tethered to your power source. If you’ve got a larger garden, you’ll likely need an extension cable

Smooth operators

This is a petrol strimmer so of course, that means there is some vibration when you are cutting, however, it isn’t too bad and when operating at lower speeds the level of vibration is lessened. This is to be expected from such a powerful engine, if you think about it, it’s not far off a small twist and go scooter in terms of power! McCulloch has taken into consideration the fact that petrol strimmers shake a fair bit when operating at high revs, and have installed an anti-vibration system that sits just under the engine, a nice touch and to be expected of a higher quality piece of kit. This is one of the better anti-vibration features that I’ve seen, and when compared to most of the trimmers I’ve had in the past, there was a significant reduction in shaking. This strimmer comes with a Power for Alliance 4Ah battery and charger and that means it can be used with any 18v garden tool from a variety of other manufacturers, including Bosch, Gardena and FlyMo. The BC330CU is equipped with an efficient 33cc two-stroke engine with a variable speed trigger and a heavy-duty, self-unravelling nylon cord that makes mincemeat of wild overgrown weeds and grasses. Petrol-powered brush cutters are inherently heavy (this one weighs 9kgs) and too unwieldy to use for more than five minutes at a time so having a bike-style handlebar system and a shoulder harness to help balance the weight is a massive bonus.

Specification: Warranty: yes (1 year) , 2 or 4 stroke: 2 stroke , Engine power: 0.9 KW / 1.2 HP , Weight: 7 kg At 10.7 kg, this is one of the heavier petrol strimmers featured here, but there are a couple of things that help make it more comfortable. Primarily, there is a decent harness included that is more than just a single shoulder strap; it’s adjustable, with padded coverings and should distribute the weight well. Specification: Warranty: yes (1 year) , 2 or 4 stroke: 2 stroke , Engine power: 3 HP , Weight: 18.2 kg This model comes with an interchangeable battery system which can be used with multiple Bosch products. It has an 18 V battery which can be used to power all 18 V Bosch tools, this is ideal if you’ve got a number of Bosch garden tools, as just one battery will be able to power all of them. It has a 2-stroke engine at 27.2 cc, so it’s far more powerful than others I’ve recommended. The engine is equipped with reduced-emission technology, which makes it fairly fuel efficient. Compared to regular 2-stroke engines, you should use up to 20% less fuel. The battery has one main plus point, which is that it charges in just 30 minutes. This means if you fancy strimming your lawn and you realise you’ve forgotten to charge the battery, you won’t have hours to wait like you would with some machines. However, the downside of the battery is its runtime – just 15 – 20 minutes.
