This picture book was born out of Adeola’s reaction to the killing of George Floyd and his realisation that, as a child, there were no books he saw that featured black children in a meaningful way. A series of clever and witty illustrations matched with informative text guides the reader through a series of situations where they might encounter prejudice, and how to form strategies to overcome a situation before it becomes a problem.You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot!

While the illustrations come from a collective effort, they flow successfully from page to page while honoring the diversity of the Black experience in all its beautiful hair styles, skin tones, and body shapes. It’s a message that is both urgent and timeless – and offers a rich and rewarding reading experience for every child. Written by award-winning illustrator Dapo Adeola as if speaking to his younger self, the narrative also delivers a poignant, empowering, and deeply affecting message to a new generation of dreamers. Featuring the work of 18 illustrators, including Diane Ewen, Onyinye Iwu and Selom Sunu - since, as Adeola states: "I'm just one person, I can't possibly hope to speak for the entire diaspora" - it distils the fierce heartache of racist injustice as well as a passionate sense of joy and hope for the future. We begin with a new baby and a welcome filled with dreams and love, and as we move through the book, (with each spread illustrated by a different creative), Dapo shares the things about life this little one must remember.

All the illustrations appear to be digital, and this book could also be used to show different illustration styles.
