About this deal

Pero un día, decidió dejar el mundo de la publicidad para emprender un rumbo propio, más artístico y personal. The Color Monster is one of my absolute favorite stories as a Pre-K teacher to talk with students about emotions. This fun activity has learners practicing their reading skills as they work to match the speech bubble to the correct monster. De olika komponenterna är utklippta i olika material och färger, som ett stort kreativt pysselprojekt. The book identifies five feelings of happy, sad, angry, fearful, and calm, but I wanted to make sure if other feelings came up there would be space for them so I included eight.

The format of the book allows for a conversation with children about managing their feelings 'putting them into bottles' and discussing why they might be feeling a particular emotion. Invite children to decorate a monster using pencils, pencils, crayons or paint and talk about how they think each monster is feeling. By illustrating such common emotions as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calm, this sensitive book gently encourages young children to open up with parents, teachers, and daycare providers. In a classroom setting this book could help individuals explore their feelings but you could also use it with a child to help them understand their emotions. The book is often used to teach children about managing their emotions and different ways to visualize how we feel. Yet, as the girl, as narrator, guides us through Llenas' wonderful mixed media pop-up collages, we find ourselves using both pictures and words to understand these complex emotions. One is the intro but each of the handout sections has their own page (ie Color Monster is fully on one page and the jars are fully on another). We say “boogers” anytime there is too much or extra of something (paper boogers when they rub the brush back and forth when painting, clay boogers when they draw too hard, etc.

Overall, I really appreciate how this book tackles the tricky issue of engaging with our different emotions using fun, child-centred characters. Display student work around the classroom as a reminder of the importance of staying in touch with our emotions. While that is one way to feel sadness, there are so many others ways to be sad, and so many other behaviors to express sadness. The PDF version needs to be downloaded off the drive and then when you open it up on your computer it is three separate pages.
